Vitalie Stavila is a researcher at Sandia National Laboratory and received his PhD in Chemistry from the State University of Moldova in Chisinau, Moldova.
He works in a lab that focuses on addressing key scientific challenges related to the development of next-generation functional devices and materials for energy generation, storage, and conversion. A central theme is the rational design of new materials by altering their chemical composition, atomic or molecular arrangements in crystalline or amorphous configurations. The work emphasizes elucidating mass and thermal transport mechanisms, particularly across nanointerfaces, to advance the understanding of microscopic processes that govern device functionality and energy-related transformations. Using this knowledge, we seek to contribute to alternative solutions and materials that address pressing scientific and engineering challenges facing society today. This includes discovering materials for applications in hydrogen storage, solid-state batteries, (electro)catalysis, spintronics, and chemical sensing. We use a range of physical methods to comprehensively characterize our materials, including X-ray and neutron scattering, Rietveld refinement, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Artificial intelligence, data science, and autonomous synthesis are integral components of our research strategy, enabling the identification of new structure-property-function relationships and accelerating new materials discovery.
