The Koo Research Group recently went to the National Space and Missile Materials Symposium.  Attendees from the group included Professor Joseph H. Koo and graduate research assistants Samantha Bernstein, Steven Kim, Remy Feru, Akshar Mashruwala, and undergraduate research assistants Courtney Bui and Sean Hong

The conference, held from June 22th to 25th in the city of Columbia, SC, was an excellent presentation and networking opportunity for the group. Topics featured at the symposium were development of advanced materials for space as well as computational modeling of materials subjected to extreme environments. Industry collaborators also presented work including Rebecca Zulch from Northrop Grumman Corporation, and Chantel Camardese from Toray Advanced Composites.

The group presented a total of 7 oral presentations and 6 posters on their research.

The presentations included:

  • Novel Fiber-Reinforced Polysiloxane Composites for Extreme Aerothermal Environments, Dr. Joseph H. Koo
  • Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polysiloxane Composites: Processing and Properties Characterization for Extreme Aerothermal Environments, Chantel Carmardese
  • Development and Characterization of PAN-Based Carbon Fiber/Polysiloxane Composites for Aerospace Applications, Courtney Bui
  • Thermophysical Properties Characterization and Material Response Modeling Development of Quartz Reinforced Polysiloxane Composites in Ablative Applications, Steven Kim
  • Manufacturing and characterization of HexTow85 Carbon Fiber/Polysiloxane Composite for Ablative Thermal Protection Systems, Remy Féru
  • Assessment and Validation of a One-Dimensional Material Response Model for PICA Ablative, Akshar Mashruwala
  • Multiscale Computational Analysis of PICA Tested on an Oxy-Acetylene Test Bed, Samantha Bernstein

The posters included:
